The relationship between sandpiles and chip firing games is fairly obvious. Sand in a sandpile is analogous to chips in the chip firing games. The grid in the traditional model of sandpiles serves as the graph on which the game is played. The threshold analogy directly translates to the firing threshold of the chip-firing games. The primary difference lies in the selection of the threshold value. In the sandpile model, the threshold value in uniform accross all points, while in the chip firing modelthe threshold varies from point to point depending on the degree of the point. In the chip firing model chips are conserved, while in the sandpile model sand is lost at points with degree less than threshold.
